ABSTRACT

A survey of food trees in home gardens in Okoko Item was carried out to determine the number of food trees and the contribution of home gardens in household food security. Data collection was done through field survey. The findings show that there is high tree species diversity in home gardens, with Dacryodes edults. as the most occurring food tree species because of its economic qualities while Trecula Africana had the lowest frequency because falling fruits pose potential danger to people living within the homestead. Four sources of food consumed by household were identified in the study area with agriculture and home gardens being the main sources of life sustenance. Therefore, there is a need to enhance and revive home gardening practices for the benefit to communities.
