ABSTRACT

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is the most common neoplasm in older men and is a significant cause of urinary symptoms in the aging male. BPH is a histologic diagnosis that is established by the presence of hyperplastic glands on pathologic inspection of prostatic tissue. In common usage, however, the term BPH is used to indicate that a patient has an enlarged prostate or that the patient has urinary symptoms that are believed to be the result of bladder outlet obstruction by the prostate (Bariy, 2001).
