Utilization Of School Library Resources By Secondary School Students: Case Study Governmrnt College Umuahia (GCU).:- Uwalaka Favour N
ABSTRACT
The study analyzed the
utilization ofschool library resources by secondary school students in
Government College, Umuahia. There were six (6) research questions answered in
the study. A descriptive survey design was used. There was no sample size as
the total population for the study was used which is ninety-one (91) students.
The instrument for data collection was through the use of a researcher-made
questionnaire titled: Utilization of School Library Resources by Secondary
School Students Questionnaire (USLRSSSQ). Data was collected and analyzed using
mean scores and standard deviation gotten with the help ofStatistical Package
for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20 software. The results were presented in
tables. The findings show that the school library resources utilized in the
library are; novels, text books, story books, dictionaries, encyclopedia, past
question papers, maps and world book. It also goes ahead to tell us the extent
to which these resources are utilized. The study also showed the reasons for
which these resources are used including for assignments, for examination,
personal study, holiday assignment etc. Effective use ofthese resources was
hindered by inadequate resources, no assistance from library staff, limited
time to use the library and unattractiveness ofthe library.Some recommendations
were made in a bid to curb these factors which are; provision of standard
library facilities, conducting user orientation programmes for students,
establishing standard library policies and development oflibrary use hour
schedules among others.
