Introduction

The world is an arena for the interplay of forces - never tranquil, but dynamic and mobile. Every generation is to receive its own impulse and kinesis of creation for the good of mankind. Science is not to be confined under the protective ambiance of society at the expense of its benefits, and so are agricultural and bioresources. To this effect, the journey to today’s events started in my form four in March 1982 at Titcombe College, Egbe. Kogi State. We went on an excursion led by Mr. D.O. Oladipo (our Agricultural Science Teacher) to the Niger River Basin Development Authority, Ejiba Outstation, Kogi State. We saw a boom irrigation spraying system simulating natural rainfall in the middle of the dry season. The deep green maize plant injected an indelible desire to pursue agriculture as a profession in me. However, as the son of a tailor cum farmer, I want to practice agriculture differently from the way my parents practiced it. I was pressured to pursue Human Medicine, among other professions, with my outstanding WASC/GCE O-level results. Though I had a vague idea of what Agricultural and Bioresources Engineering entails, I desired to provide machines and implement for agricultural production processes. Agricultural and Bioresources Engineering is the study and application of engineering and design principles for agricultural purposes. Agricultural and Bioresources Engineering is derived from two words: Agriculture/Bioresources and Engineering. Agriculture/ Bioresources produces crops, rears livestock, processes various products, and markets the end products, while engineering employs the materials and forces of nature to benefit man. The challenges often encountered in agriculture many a time require more than one engineering branch; hence, combining more than one of the branches is most necessary. Agricultural and Bioresources Engineering applies all branches of engineering knowledge to the extent that such knowledge may be used in agriculture in all its ramifications and rural living. An Agricultural and Bioresources Engineer is a systems engineer who integrates discoveries and knowledge from multiple fields/ disciplines to solve complex problems that intertwine food production, environmental issues, natural resources, and socioeconomic systems. He is an all-around and complete Engineer who combines knowledge in various engineering disciplines such as mechanical engineering, civil engineering, environmental engineering, chemical engineering, computer engineering, industrial engineering, and electrical engineering to solve complex systems challenges. Agricultural and Bioresources Engineers pride themselves as the jack of all trades, masters of all. Agricultural and Bioresources Engineering is modern agriculture's chief execution tool of management and production. Agricultural and Bioresources Engineering conventionally is divided into four major options in Nigeria: Farm Power and Machinery, Crop Processing and Storage, Farm Structures and Environment, and Soil and Water Engineering. Due to its versatility, the options are growing by the day as knowledge advances. My major area of specialization is crop processing and storage engineering, which involves the application of engineering principles to solve reallife problems or issues in crop/ fruit/ vegetable/fibre processing and storage
