ABSTRACT
Malnutrition
is a significant global public health burden with greater concern among
children under five years. The possibility of achieving the Sustainable
Development Goals (SDG’s) which aims to end all forms of malnutrition in
children by 2025 is therefore under threat. The study was conducted to
determine the trends and patterns of malnutrition amongst young children in
Nigeria. The study analysed data from the Nigeria Demographic Health Survey
(NDHS) 2003, 2013 and 2018. The study examined the trends in malnutrition over
the three years in a population of 2003 (11695), 2013(45631) and 2018 (46802).
From the study surveyed, results showed that the household wealth index from
poorest increased from (24.0%) in 2003 to (23.4%) in 2018. The percentage
ofmothers with no education increased from (58.1%) in 2003 to (49.9%) in
2018.Giving the child baby formula from (9.9%) in 2003 to (4.9%) in 2018, eggs
from (44.8%) to (10.5%), dark green leafy vegetables from (31.2%) to (29.0%),
meat (beef, pork, lamb, chicken etc) from (44.8%) to (11.7%), pumpkin, carrots
and orange from (16.3%) to (6.9%). In the anthropometric status, children who
were severely stunted increased from (19.2%) to (17.1%), moderately stunted
from (38.3%) to (36.3%) and normal from (88.6%) to (53.9%). Children who are
severely wasted increased from (2.2%) to (1.8%), moderately wasted from (9.2%)
to (6.8%), children who were normal from (88.6%) to (89.3%) and children who
are overweight from (4.0%) to (2.1%). The implementation of National nutrition
strategies should focus on the vulnerable groups by increasing women’s access
to secondary and post-secondary education, and harnessing the potential
ofimproved maternal and child nutrition in the country.
