ABSTRACT
This research centres on training
as a tool for greater productivity in the public sector using power holding
company of Nigeria Umuahia as a case study. As identified in this research,
lack of training in most public and private business sectors in Nigeria have
profitability of such organizations. Consequently, the major objective of this
research is to identify the cardinal impact of training workers, mostly in
Nigeria public sector. In Power Holding Company of Nigeria, Umuahia was used
based on its best representation of its workers productivity. The population of
this study consists of 247 employees of PHCN; Composed of top and middle
management and operatives. Six research questions and one hypothesis was
formulated, which guided the study. A 21 item structured questionnaire was
developed d to ensure the reliability of the study, simple percentage and
chisquare (x2) were used to answer the research questions, while T-test JIiv
was used to test the hypothesis at 0.95 level of significance. The researcher
also used literature. The findings of the study include the following: 1.
Training and refresher course programmes were found to be effective tools for
checking employees obsolesced. 2. That training is an effective motivational
tool and criteria for promotion. 3. certain constraint inhibit training
programmes and these includes huge financial requirement, failure to apply
training will results in the work place an absence of good evaluation
technique. It was concluded that training is an effective tool for actualizing
public sector business objectives and maintain continued existence against this
background; it was recommended that organizations should organize training and
refresher courses programmes for their employees more often and training should
form the most relevant integral part of organization promotion and incentives i
policies.
