ABSTRACT

This study aimed at investigating the toxicological effect of monosodium glutamate on serum lipid profile and hematological parameters in wistar albino rats. This present study observed that the administration of monosodium glutamate (MSG) shows .a significant (P<0.05) increase in the level of Total Cholesterol test in Group 3 and Group 6 (1 61 ±30 24 and 1 45 ±45 35) when compared with control (1 .23±4.6Q), Triacylglyceride shows a significant (P<0.05) increase in Group 3, 5 and Group6 (1.66±2.96, 1.65±32.16 and 1.82±35.57) when compared with control (1 44±31 93), LDL-Chol shows a significant (P<O 05) increase in Group 2,3,4,5 and Group 6 (61 .41±28.96,75.84±6.61,31.8±2.97,74.82±0.56,27.63±16.76) when compared with control (14 91±4 81),and HDL-Chol level shows a significant decrease m Group 2,3,4 and Group 5 (23 84±8 43,5 1 87±36 25,79 87±16 86, and 66 16±59 85) when compared with control (97.75±10.11) which increases the risk of heart diseases, atherosclerosis, (cardiovascular diseases).A statistical analysis from this present study also show a significant P<0.05) decrease in the concentration of hematological parameters such as red blood cell (C) Group 2, 3, 4, 5 and Group 6 (4 35±0 21, 3 85±0 07, 3 15±0 07, 2 7±0 14 and 2 05±0 07) when compared with control (4.6±0.85), Packed cell volume PCV) Group 2;3,4,5 and Group 6 (34.5±2.12, 30.5±0.71, 27±1.41, 24.5±0.71 and 20.5±0.71) when compared with control (36.5±2.12), hemoglobin concentration HB) Group 6 (6 83±0 24),when compared with control (11 83±1 £7) and white blood cell (WBC) Gioup6(5 9±0 42) counts when compared with control (111±0 14) which indicates deficiency of red cells or haemoglobin in the blood stream which causes anemia.
