ABSTRACT
The effect of Urtica dioica leaves on kidney and
liver functions was investigated in dihydrotestosterone- estradiol valarate
induced Benign prostatic hyperplasia in male wistar rats. A total of20 rats
weighing 120-150g were divided according to their body weight into five groups.
One group was used as a control group and other group received subcutaneous
injection of dihydrotestosterone and estradiol for 28 days. Group II was used
as disease control, Group III received Finasteride. Group IV and V was treated
with lOOmg/kg bw and 200 mg/kg bw of Urtica dioica extract. The result of the
result of the phytochemical analysis showed the presence of Alkaloids,
Flavonoid, Saponin, Tannins and Phytosterols. The result ofthe acute toxicity
studies showed that the extract was safe at 2759 mg/kg bw ofthe extract. The
result showed that relative heart and kidney weight of the disease control were
not significant at P>0.05 significant level. However, the relative prostate
weight increased significantly in the disease control when compared with normal
group. The level of Prostatic Specific Antigen, Urea, Creatinine and Albumin
were significantly (P<0.05) reduced in other experimental group when
compared with the disease control. Also, the result showed significant
(P<0.05) increase in AST, ALT and ALP in disease control when compared to
normal group and experimental groups. The result showed that the extract of U.
dioica was able to restore the integrity of kidney and the liver thereby
offering a nephroprotective and renal protective effect on the two vital
organs. Hence, the extract can be pharmacologically useful in management
ofbenign prostatic hyperplasia.
