ABSTRACT

Fish has long been a major nutrient source for Nigerians due to protein, fat, vitamin and mineral content. A major product of fish processing is fish oil. The aim of this study was to evaluate the total lipids, cholesterol and triacylglycerol composition of oil in four different locally available species of fish: Titus, mackerel, croaker, and catfish. Oils from four (4) commercially imp\irlant fishes found in Nigeria, namely Catfish (Clarias gariepinus), Tilapia (Tilapia :di/ii), Croaker (Micropogonias undulatus), and Mackerel (Scomberomorus tritor) were extracted and examined for the above parameters using standard protocols. Lipid content values of all sampled fishes were significantly (P<0.05) different from each other in the order: Catfish (12.95 10.35) > Mackerel (9.09±0.042) >Tilapia (8.56:i:0.0I) > Croaker (6.61±0.014). Total cholesterol (mg/l00g) content values of all sampled fishes were significantly (P<0.05) different from each other in the order: Mackerel (106.5010.71) > Tilapia (64.00±1.41)- Catfish (47.0-1.41 Croaker ( 43 .00± 1.41 ). Percentage triacylglycerol content of all sampled Ii shes were signif ic11 :! ly (P<0.05) different from cach other in the order: Tilapia (72.4910.01)> Mackerel (70.39-%.01 Croaker (63.08±0.01)> Catfish (61.77±0.06). The study indicated Mackerel, Catfish. Tilapia. Croaker to be good sources of dietary lipids namely cholesterol and triacylglycerols, therefore consumption of the studied fishes may proffer potent nutritional and health advantages.
