ABSTRACT
Yam (Cioscorea spp) is the second
most important crop of hot humid countries. Some examples of the species are D.
batatas, D. alata, D. esculenta, etc. Nigeria is one of the largest producers
of yarn. Yarn serves as food for humans and vegetable burrowers. They are also
medicinal. Industrially, yams can be processed into chips, flour and biscuits.
Yams harvested are seldom used up till the next planting season. This creates
the problem of storage to avoid losses due to pest and pathogen attacks. Some
methods employed against these losses include the use of cold storage, use of
pesticides etc. These methods employed are seldom effective, in the case of
cold storage, the cost of maintenance is high. The use of pesticides has been
found to be detrimental to the final consumers of the food. Initial work done
using plant parts showed fungitoxic effects on these patl1ogens. This work
carried out showed antifungal effects of the leaves of Azadirachta indica and
chrornoiaena odorata on B. theobromae, a causal organism of tuber rot in
storage. The work was carried out in vitro and ex vitro. Cold water extracts
were used in different concentrations (100%, 50%, and 25%). The extract with
the highest concentration (100%) gave the best results.
