ABSTRACT
The weaning potential of some Iocaliy sourced
substrates (River sand, Coconut fiber, Raffia palm fiber, Sawdust, Rice husk
and Wood ash ) and their combinations on in vitro raised cocoyam (Colocasia
esculenta ) were conducted to detennine and ascertain the responses of cocoyam
(Colocasia escu!enta. var coco India) .The result showed that the greatest
survival rates were obtained from Rice husk followed by saw dust when used
alone and in combined forms. River sand when used alone showed poor performance
based on the survival rate but supported cocoyam growth and survival when river
sand is mixed with the other substrates {coconut fiber, raffia palm fiber, saw
dust and Rice husk). Wood ash failed to support the growth /survival of the
cocoyam when used alone and in combined forms hence indicating that wood ash is
not good to be used as weaning substrate.
