ABSTRACT

The study examined the theoretical estimation of magnetic field on electric transmission lines using ampere's law. The proximity of residential and work places to overhead power lines has been a factor of concern for public health. It has been found out that electric transmission lines magnetic field bares possible cause of cancer such as childhood leukemia (the most common type of cancer in children and teens, is a cancer of white blood cells). The results of the magnetic field intensity based on the distance from the conductor base (m) of the high tension and low tension electric power transmission lines where estimated. The magnetic field intensity of high tension wires (mA/m) gave 2.190 while that of low tension wires gave 0.069 from a distance of Om. From a distance of Im, the magnetic field intensity of high tension wires is 2.172 while that of low tension wires is 0.061. In 2m distance, the magnetic field intensity of HT is 2.143 and that of LT is 0.060. In a distance of Sm, the magnetic field intensity of HT is 2.139 while that of LT is 0.059. The magnetic field intensity of HT is 2.006 while that of LT is 0.056 in a distance of 10m. In 20m distance from the conductor base, the HT is 1.180 while the LT is 0.045. The result also showed that in a distance of SOm from the conductor base, the HT is 0.927 while that of LT is 0.026. The results proved that the magnetic field intensity diminishes with distance from the source and that the high tension has high magnetic field intensity when compared to the magnetic field intensity in a low tension. There is a great risk on the health of individuals living, working or caring out activities near electric transmission lines. However, it is recommended that people living near electric transmission lines should be enlighten on the health implications of this and also the government should create awareness to people living near the electric transmission lines about the harmful effects of the fields around them.
