The Role. Of Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation (Ndic) On The Operation Of The Nigerian Banking Industry
ABSTRACT
The study analyzed the effect of deposit insurance scheme on commercial banks activities in Nigeria from 1996 to 2016. The study adopted the ex-post facto research design. Annual time series data were collated from Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Statistical Bulletins and Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) annual reports for the period. Two (2) hypotheses, which were tested using the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression model where total bank insured premium (TBIP) was adopted as the independent variable and total banking sector loans (BLOANS) and total bank deposits were the dependent variables. Findings from the study revealed that the presence of deposit insurance scheme had poitive and significant impact on bank loans and bank deposits in Nigeria. The study thus concluded that the presence of deposit insurance scheme in Nigeria is a major boost to banks in Nigeria. The study thus recommends the provision of adequate funding and flexibility to call upon a wide range of stabilization tools such as the authority to increase level of coverage and expand its scope which would enable deposit insurers to react quickly to rapidly changing circumstances which are capable of threatening the ability of commercial banks to grant loans.
