The Responsiveness Of Nigerian Economic Growth To Her Domestic Public Debt:- Okike, Edith D
ABSTRACT
The study examines the
responsiveness of Nigerian economic growth to her domestic public debt. The
specific objectives were to: determine the impact of domestic debt on economic
growth in Nigeria; ascertain the influence of public debt servicing on the
economic growth; examine the impact oftreasury bills on economic growth
ofNigeria; investigate the impact of treasury bonds on economic growth of
Nigeria; explore the impact of federal government of Nigeria bonds on economic
growth of Nigeria. Secondary data were used for the analysis sourced from
Central Bank of Nigeria Statistical bulletin. Multiple regression of ordinary
least square (OLS) technique was employed. While, the result ofthe study
reveals that among the exogenous variables that domestics public debt, treasury
bills, treasury bonds, Federal Government of Nigerian bonds, all have
significant negative impact on Nigerian economic growth while public debt
servicing has significant positive impact on the economic growth. Thus the
researcher therefore recommends that Nigerian government should reduce the
volume of her domestic public debt acquisition in order to increase the credit
facilities available to the private sector.
