The Relationship Between Biologic Markers And Quantitative Traits In Two Varieties Of Guinea Fowl In The Humid Tropical Environment
ABSTRACT
The study investigates the relationship between biologic markers and quantitative traits loci in two varieties of guinea fowl in the humid tropics, adopting it for marker-assisted selection (MAS). A total of 300 keets comprising equal number of pearl and lavender varieties which were generated from parent stock sourced from Zaria. The keets were raised in two groups according to variety in RCBD experiment and replicated six (6) times. Data on biologic markers and quantitative traits were collected on the keets at two (2) weeks interval. The result of the study revealed significant (p<O.05) but negative relationship between PCV and Fl (-0.991) in pearl: and negative relationship between PCV and FCR (-0.970), and positive relationship between BG and FCR (0.28). There was high negative and significant (p<0.OS) relation between ESR and BG (-0.977) in pearl variety at 5th and 7th week of age and in there was a high and positive and significant relationship (p<O.O5 between WBC and BG (0.955) and BH and PCV (0.98 1) in lavender at 5th and 7th week of age.
