ABSTRACT
The
need for this research work is to have an extensive study on how to accelerate
profit growth in a new merger banking system. This work investigates the
prospect of accelerating profit growth in new merger banking system using
Ecobank as a case study. With these problems in mind, two hypotheses were
formulated. Data were selected using both primary and secondary sources. The
hypothesis were the widely known statistical instrument, the chi square test.
From the analysis and test carried out, the research made observation firstly
the capital base of the bank has positive relationship with the amount of profit
made, recently. Merger banks tends to make more profit because of the pooling
of ideas. Based on these findings, the paper concludes, that for a bank to do
well in terms of profitability and credibility, the amount in share capital
should be large enough to enhance its profit making capabilities. Therefore
recommend that instead of outright liquidation of banks with inadequate capital
base, such banks should merge their resources together to increase their
financial strength and protect the interest of depositors and share holders.
