ABSTRACT

The medicinal effects of Ocimum gralissimum, Gongronema latfo1ia and Xyiopta aethiopica on E. coii induced diarrhea rats were evaluated and compared with the untreated control rats. The body weights of the untreated controls rats was greatly reduced by -5.87 ± 1.94 while that of the O.gratissimum treatment group and G. iaqfo i/a treatment group reduce insignificantly by -1.62 ± 4.33, and -3.47 ± 4.04 but the X aethiopica treatment group did not show any weight reduction 4.53 ± 7.16 as compared to the untreated control. Mean relative liver weight decreased from 0.026 ± 0.007 in the control compared to O. gratissimum group 0.030± 0.005 G. lailfolia 0.032 ± 0.009 and X acihiopica 0.035 ± 0.006, the relative kidney weight decreased by 0.0053 ± 0.004 in the control group compared to 0.0072 ± 0.008 0. gratissmlum, 0.0056 ± 0.007 G. lat/folia and 0.0064 ± 0.005 Xaeihiopica. The serum AST levels increased by 15.12 ± 6.38 in the control and decreased by 9.60 ± 7.63 0. gratissimum, 11.44 ± 3.3 G. iatfolia and 9.57 ± 2.55 Xaethiopica and also in serum ALT levels, the control group and increased significantly by 157.3 ± 44.12 compared to the decrease in test groups O.gratissimum 130.78 j72.07, G.latifolia 80.62 ±_27.35 arid 90.22 ± 3.38. The serum bicarbonate levels decreased from 17.8 ± 1.54 in the control to 17.3 ± 1.86 in Ocinuin gratissimum group, 15.1 ± 1.95 in Gongronema Latifolia and 16.1 ± 2.32 in Xylopia aethlopica group respectively. The serum cholesterol levels was of higher concentration in the control group by 26.68 ± 3.65 than the test groups 0.gratissimum 20.96 ± 6.73, G.Iatifolia 20.49 ± 3.03 Xaethiopica 11.63 ± 4.05 while the chloride was decreased.
