ABSTRACT

In 1986, government liberalized the marketing  of cocoa in Nigeria. The liberalization, policy for cocoa is expected to/impred )the output of cocoa. But this seems not having any impact on the output of the commodity This study investigated the impact4 the liberalization on the output of cocoa in cross River State. Obubra Local Area which is the major cocoa producing area was purposively selected Five communities were randomly selected and ten cocoa farmers were randomly selected from each community, giving a total of fifty farmers. Data obtain were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as means, percentages and graph. T-test, growth rate and regression analysis were also used in the cause of the study. The results showed before liberalization defined as between 1980 to 1986 and during liberalization defined as between 1994 to 2000 was significantly different on the following variables: farm size; output; product price and labour use. There were fluctuating trend in output before and during liberalization. The most important factors that influenced the output of cocoa during liberalization are use of labour and cocoa farmers income. Though income negatively influence output of cocoa, farmers should be encouraged to expand their farms rather than using the increased income for other activities including marring more wives.
