Abstract
The
experiment lasted for a period of 3 weeks. The insecticidal property of
Capsicum annum agamst Callosobruchus muculatus (cowpea weevil) was investigated
in the laboratory. Mortality rate of cowpea weevil was tested using Capsicum
annum at different grams ranging from 1g, 1.5g and 2g of the powder against 20
adult cowpea weevils. The experiment was carried out in replicates. The
percentage mortality rates were 17.33 (86.65%), 18.00 (90.00%) and 19.69
(98.35/o) were observed after 2 weeks of subjecting the adult cowpea weevil to
Capsicum annum of 1g, 1.5g and 2g. the efficacy of the plant powders on the
emergence rate was also investigated within a period of 3 weeks. The values
obtained within these weeks were analyzed in means, standard deviation and
ANOVA. The mean and standard deviation values for plant powder were (28.67)
(±1.155), (2.33) (±0.577) and (0.33) (±0.577). The values show significant
difference at (P<0.05). It was observed that the powders reduced the
emergence rate of weevil. Therefore, the plant powders should be used to
protect stored cowpea from pest infestation.
