ABSTRACT
The effect of various
concentrations of aqueous mixture of substanaces (salt and Alcohol): 60g/L/kg
body weight (high close) and 10g/L/kg body weight (low dose) for salt and
alcohol ( ic:total ethanol 98%) 6ml in 940m1 of distilled water per kg body weight
(high dose) and 3m1 in 940ni1 1)/W/kg body weight (Low dose) on sonic
biochemical indices of rat liver function: Alanine and aspartate aminotransferases,
and Alkaline phosphatase. Blood urea nitrogen (Bun), total protein
concentration and electrolytes: sodium, potassium, chloride and bicabonate were
investigated on hypertensive albino wister strained rats. Five groups were
considered in the cause of this study ranging from group I through V. group I
(GPI) hypertensive on high salt dose. Group 11 (UP1I) is the high salt group
control subjected to low salt supplement. Group III (GPIJI) is the hypertensive
group subjected of high alcohol concentration. Group IV (GP IV) S tile high
alcohol group control on low alcohol supplement. Group V is the general control
group fed on normal feed and distilled water Only. Each of the five groups were
made up or six albino rats each. Administration of high closes of substances
containing salt and alcohol were given to group I and 111 and a low dose of
salt to group II produced mean weight loss of -47.73 ± 1.98, and -49.07 ± 3.09
and -21.95 ± 1.00 respectively. which group IV and group V (Control) gained
mean weight of 30.57 ± 1.80, and 26.45 ± 2.88g. Blood urea Nitrogen level was
elevated at high and low doses of salt concentration as seen in GPI (120.50 ±
3.64iu/L) and Gp11 (81.33 ± i.49iu/L) but remained unaffected at low and high
concentration of alcohol in GPIII (43.25 ± 1 .09iu/L) and OP J\/ (25.33 ±
0.94), while GE\ remained normal. Serum protein decreased in OPI (2.40 ±
0.08iu/L) and GP 11(4.42 ± 0.23 iu/L), Groups 111 (high alcohol dose) and V
were found to be unaffected having a macan of 7.45 ± 0.34iu/L and 7.50 ± 0.00
and there was a significant elevation i1 OP IV (Low alcohol dose) all having
their elevation or decrease being concentration dependent. Serum sodium,
polassium and chloride levels in the blood was found to be elevated in all
groups administered substances apart & omn group V (control) that
maintained normal values. 96.67 ± 0.75ui/L, 4.07 ± 0.09iulL and 138.50 ±
0.76ui/L were for chloride, potassium and sodium respectively. Serum bicarbonates
decreased in all the groups apart from OP V maintaining a normal value of 25.00
± 0.58. Liver enzyme activities of Alkaline Phosnliatne. Alanine
Aminotransferase and Aspartate Aminotransferase elevated in groups I and Iii
only being groups led on high concentrations of Salt and alcohol. . Groups II,
IV and V were all found to have normal ranges in 1\LP, ALT, AS'I' enzymes.
Hence, their level of elevation or decrease depends on the administered
concentration. Mean relative liver weight for the groups decreased from 0.0501
± 0.00224 OP 111, 0.0493 ± 0.00505 GP I, 0.0402 ± 0.058 OP II, 0.392 ± 0.00290
GP V to 0.034 1 ± 0.00114 OP IV. Mean relative kidney weight followed in the
same orders as that of the mean relative liver weight for the groups Ito V.
This indicates that the substances of salt and alcohol in high closes increases
the weight of both liver and kidney when compared with the control: hence
reflecting the level of damages caused by the administration of these
substances on the liver and kidney of hypertensive patients.
