ABSTRACT
The effects of
coccidiosis on the electrolyte levels and uric acid concentration in the blood
of poultry birds were measured at weekly intervals and compared with normal
controls. The weights of the healthy birds and that of the infected ones were
also recorded and compared. At the end of the experiment, it was discovered
that the electrolyte levels tested for, fluctuated during the period of
infection. The electrolyte levels of the broiler birds and the local bald
necked male birds had higher serum uric acid concentrations of 7.00 ± 1.70 and
7.35 ± 0.15mrno1/L respectively. The weights of broiler birds with infection
were greatly reduced and the birds appeared dizzy, weaker and leaner than the
Harco birds. However, the Harco breeds had higher Na concentrations than the
broilers, bald necked and local females, while the local males had the highest
sodium lcve! of 173.0 ±13.0 as against 160.0 ±0.0 of Harco during the period f
infection.
