ABSTRACT
Isolation
of rot causing fungi in tomato fruits purchased from four different markets in
Ahia state was carried out on Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) following standard
procedures. The fungal isolates were identified namely Aspergillus sp.,
Penicillum sp. And Geotrichum sp. and A.niger was the most abundant. ,
Pathogenecity test carried out on these isolates confirmed them pathogenic. The
effect of extracts of Azadirachta indica leaf, Tetrapleura tetraptera pod,
Carica papaya leaf and Anacardium occidentale leaf at various concentrations ()
00, 50 and 25mg/ml) on mycelia growth of the fungal isolates were investigated.
The result showed that A. indica leaf extract inhibited mycelia growth of all
the three isolates at various concentrations. T.tetraptera pod extract
inhibited the growth of only Aspergillus sp. and Penicillum sp. while A.
occidentale and C.papaya had no inhibition. The diameter of zone of inhibition
recorded for A. indica ranged between 5.5 - 12.5mm, 6.0 -12.5 and 7.0 to 10.5
for Aspergilus sp., Penicillum sp. and Geotrichum sp. respectively, while
T.tetrapera had 7.5 - 13.0mm and I 1.5 - 18.5 for A.niger and Penicillum sp.
respectively. The Azadirachta indica leaf and Tetrap/eura tetraptera pod
extract which are cheap and environment safe are promising for protecting crop
species against fungal infestation and leading j towards improvement on the
crop in terms of yield and productivity.
