The Effect Of Methanolic Leaf Extract Of Bridelia Micrantha On The Lipid Profile Of All Oxan Induced Diabetic Winster Albino Rats

ABSTRACT

The present study evaluated the effect of methanolic leaf extract of Bride/ia micrantha on the lipid profile of alloxan induced diabetic rats. Forty male albino rats, where randomly assigned into 5 groups of eight rats each. They were induced with diabetes using 160 ing/kg of alloxan monohydrate injected interperitoneally. Group A received distilled water (negative control), group B received glibenclamide (positive group), while groups C, D and E received 125, 250 and 500 mg/kg body weight of Bride/ia niicrantha extract (BME). The extract and drug were administered to the rats orally for 14 days using gastric gavage. At the end of the treatment, blood was collected from the media canthus of the eye of the rats for biochemical analysis. The parameters analyzed were: total cholesterol, high density lipoproteins (HDL), triacylglycerol (TG), low density lipoproteins (LDL) and very, low density lipoproteins (VLDL). Bride/ia inicraniha extract caused various levels of significant (p < 0.05) levels of reduction of total cholesterol, triacylglycerols and LDL while the extract at only the dose of 125 mg.kg caused a significant (p < 0.05) increase in the HDL. Also the VLDL was only significantly (p <0.05) reduced at the dose of 125 mg/kg of BME. In conclusion, , it could be suggested that prolonged oral administration of aqueous leaf extract of Bride/ia micrantha, especially at the dose of 125 mg/kg and below, will be of benefit in managing hyperlipidemia associated with diabetes mellitus.
