ABSTRACT
The
methanol extract of Mucuna prurienspruriens (Fabaceae) leaves was investigated
for antidiabetic activity using alloxan-induced diabetic rats. The following
parameters were clinically analyzed: catalase, malondialdehyde (MDA),
superoxide dismutase (SOD), reduced glutathione (GSH), vitamin E, vitamin C,
creatinine, glutathione peroxide (GPX), fasting blood sugar (FBS). Tire total
of25 wistar Albino rats used were randomly assigned into 4 groups (A-D). Group
A was not subjected into hepatocyte damage, but received only normal feed and
water. Group B was given water, feed and were induced with diabetes but without
treatment, Group C received both water, feed, induced with diabetes and were
treated with standard drug, glibenclamide, Group D rats received water, feed,
diabetes induced and treated with extract ofMucunaprurienspruriens at dose
(50mg/kg and lOOmg/kg) body weight. The results of the catalase, MDA, presented
showed a significant (P<0.05) increase in the untreated diabetic group B
(negative control), and group treated with the standard drug, when compared
with the normal control. The result of GPx, GSH showed a significant
(P<0.05) decrease in the untreated diabetic group (negative control), and
groups treated with the standard drug. When compared with the Normal control.
Vitamin C, E and SOD showed no significant difference (P>0.05) in all the
groups treated with 50mg/kg ofthe Mucuna prurienspruriens extract when compared
with the untreated diabetic group. The plant extract had a positive effect on
the renal function ofthe rat.
