ABSTRACT
Colocasia esculenta is a medicinal plant believed to have many agent acting in many ways for the health benefit of human. The study investigated the acute toxivity, phytochemicalcontent and effect of methanol extract on lipid profile parameters and biomarkers of prostate dysfunction. The result indicated the high level of oxalate (28.15). Other phytochemical constituent such as flavonoid,phenols, phytate and reducing sugar are found in moderate amount. The result of LD50was 5000mg1kgbody weight. There was no significant difference (p>O.05) in the relative heart, kidney and lungs weight. The relative prostate weight increased significantly (p<O.05) in disease control relative to other groups. The result shows a significant (p<O.05) reduction in the prostatic specific antigen (PSA) in the treatment groups when compared with the disease control group. The result of the lipid profile parameters showed that cholesterol, TAG, LDL and VLDL increased significantly (p<O.05) in disease control relative to other experimental groups while HDL-cholesterol increased (p<0 .05) significantly in finasteride and extract treated groups relative to the disease control group. This study suggests that there is strong indication of the hypolipidemic activity of methanol extract of colocasia esculenta. It also showed that it can be used in the management of BPH. Therefore the result showed that colocasia esculenta corm can serve as a source of useful drugs because of the presence of phytochemical agent.
