The Effect Of Locally Available Agro Wastes On The Cultivation Of Edible Mushroom Pleurotus Tuber-Regium
ABSTRACT
This study examined the effect of locally available agrowastes on the cultivation of Pleurotus tuber-regium and the best way of converting agrowastes into edible biomass instead of burning them, and causing a source of )ollution. Fruit bodies of the edible mushroom Pleurotus tuber-regium which a e common in the tropical rainforest zone of Nigeria were produced on selected locally available agrowastes - cassava peels, straw and retiver grass. Experiments were conducted using completely randomized design (CRD) with 3 treatments and 4 replications. Cassava peels were the best in supporting mycelial growth and fruit bodies formation of Pleurotus tuber-regiurn. This was closely followed rice straw and vetiver grass. Results from ANOVA table showed significant differences between the treatments. That is, the different types of lowly available agrowastes used had effect on the number of fruitbodies formation, weight of fruit bodies and the pileus diameter.
