ABSTRACT

The effect of feeding Garcina kola on Wister albino rats was investigated in this

study. The experiment lasted for 2months. The animals were randomly assigned

into five ventilated cages having four (4) in each. Garcina kola extract was

adni.inistered to the animals in groups 1 to 5. Group 1 or control (was fed with

growers only), group 2 (95% feed + 5% G.kola), group 3 (90% feed + 10%

G.kola), group 4 (80% feed + 20% G.kola) and group 5 (50% feed + 50% G.kola).

The phytochemical parameters were carried out and Alkaloid was found to be

5.13±0.67, Fiavonoid 0.93±0.028, Tannin 5.075 ±0.021, Saponin (mg/kg)

25.3600±0.014 and Cyanogenic glycoside (mmol/rng) 4.2750±0.445. The

proximate analysis showed that the sample has a high dry matter (92.6±0.79)%,

high carbohydrate (80.58±0.82)%, low crude fibre (2.94±0.04)% and low lipids

(1.48+0.03)%, low protein (3.19±0.02)%, low moisture content (7.4±0.80)%. This

composition shows that the sample could be a good soul-ce of Carbohydrate and

dry matter. The parameters are kidney function (urea, creatinine) and electrolytes

(chloride, potassium, sodium and carbonate), the results shows that urea increased

significantly (P<0.05) at 5% (32.18±0.7) when compared to control (5.49±0.80)

and increased significantly (P<0.05) at 20% (21.98±0.785) and at 50%

I (13.34±0.75), Creatinine increased significantly (P<0.05) at 5% (1.02±0.035) in

comparism to control (0.50±0.112) and decreased significantly (P<0.05) at 10%

(1.45±0.075) it also significantly increased(p<0,05) at 20% (1.18±0.056) and 50%

(0.56±0.035), Chloride decreased significantly (P<0.05) at 5% (143.68±0.575), at

20% (123.76+0.872) and 50% (138.51±0.998) in comparism to control

(144.83±1.150) but deceased significantly (P<0.05) at 10% (138.51±0.329),

potassium decreased significantly (P<0.05) across the group, at 5% (2.52±0.021),

10% (3.05±0.020), 20% (3.82±0.015) and 50% (3.33±0.030), sodium increased

significantly (P<0.05) with the highest levels seen at 20% (78.56±1.264) followed

by 50% (46.06±1.268), then 5% (40.45±1.567) and least 10% (26.47±0.634) in

comparism to control (5.27±0.755) and carbonate decreased significantly (P<0.05)

from 5% (127.50±18.75) to 10% (85.50±1.000), then 20% (57.50±4.330) and 50%

(37.50±7.500) in comparism to control (145.00±15.612). With the high level of

Cyanogenic Glycoside obtained, Garcina kola can be used as anti-inflammatory

and anti-oxidant agents.
