ABSTRACT

An experiment was carried out to determine the performance of goats fed municipal organic waste treated with diastic microbes. Eighteen (18) Red Sokoto Goats were used in the studies which were randomly divided into three (3) groups of six (6) goats per treatment group. Each group was assigned to one of the three treatment diets, Diet A (Untreated Municipal Organic Waste 45%, PKC 22.5%, Wheat Offal 22.5%, Molasses 10%), Diet B (Treated Municipal Organic Waste 45%, PKC 22.5%, Wheat Offal 22.5%, Molasses 10%), Diet C (Treated Municipal Organic Waste 70%, PKC 10%, Wheat Offal 10%, Molasses 10%). The goats were fed ad-libitum and clean water provided. Parameters measured includes: Weight gain, Feed intake, Feed efficiency, Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR) and Economic benefit analysis. They were weighed at the beginning of the study and at weekly intervals for 52 days. Feeds were measured before given to the animals for data collection. The result on daily weight gain was highest in Treatment C (91.54g) followed by Treatment B (58.65) and then Treatment A (44.2) at (P<O.05), and the highest feed intake was observed in in Treatment A (462.85) followed by Treatment B (436.83) and then Treatment C (396.47) at (P<0.05). Based on the economic benefits studied, the cost of production was generally in Treatment A (l8198.23), followed by Treatment C (46795.93) and then Treatment B (~ 6460.79). The highest revenue was obse-rved in Treatment C (410478.78), followed by Treatment A (N9638.15) and the lowest was Treatment B with (48531.18) (P<0.05). The result of this study showed that municipal organic waste could be treated with diastic microbes and then used as used as component of diet for goats giving very good economic returns. Therefore, it is recommended that, municipal organic waste which is in abundant be treated with diastic microbes and fed to goats.
