ABSTRACT
This study determined
the antimicrobial and phytochemical effects of Sacoglotis gabonensis. The ethanol and aqueous extracts were
prepared by soaking 100 g of the powdered stem bark in 1L of each extract at
room temperature for 48 h. The extracts were filtered separately through
whatman filter paper and concentrated using rotary evaporator (Heidoph 4001
efficient), warmed on water bath at 70 °C for the aqueous extract and
temperature of 50 °C for ethanol extracts, to obtain semi solid products. Escherichia coli was susceptible to the
ethanol extract of Sacoglottis gabonensis
at 200mg/ml concentration while at a similar concentration for Candida albicans, a diameter zone of
inhibition of 11.0mm was obtained. It also demonstrated remarkable activity
against notable multi drug resistant organisms like Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas
aeruginosa with zones of inhibition of 11.0mm respectively. The
antimicrobial activity of ethanol extracts of Sacoglottis gabonensis was observed to be concentration-dependent
and the activity varied with concentration against the tested pathogens. There
was noticeable increase in the zone size recorded against E. coli when the aqueous and ethanol extracts were tested in
synergy. This study plant materials contained alkaloids, terpenoid, Flavonoids,
Tannins and saponin but to varying degrees
