Survey Of The Abundance And Distribution Of Some Indigenous Tree Species In Abia Central Agroecological Zone Of Abia State, Nigeria
ABSTRACT
The study was conducted with the view to analyzing and comparing the abundance and distribution of selected indigenous tree species in Abia Central Agroecological Zone of Abia State. Four forest formation: the protected (2 forest reserve) and unprotected (2 free forest) were used for the analysis. Actual measurement of the quadrat started at a distance of 1km away from each enclaves and enumeration of tree species of im and above in height. Six lOOm x lOOm qudrats were laid ramdomly within the forest reserves and free forests respectively making a total of twelve quadrats used for the study. Enumeration of the species within the quadrat was done and their population determined. The population mean of the species in the forest reserves and free forest was compared using student snottiest. The result shows that there were more Milicia excelsa (7), Brachystegii eurycoma (11) and Afzelia africana (11), in the forest reserve than in the free forest (Milicia excelsa: 3; Brachystegia eurycoma: 4; Afzelia africana: 4). There is significant difference (P<0.05) in the population of the species in the forest reserve (1.611 + 1.42) than the free forest (0.611 ± 0.698). The result indicates high rate of loss of indigenous tree species in Abia Central Agro-ecological Zone of Tropical rainforest of Nigeria.
