ABSTRACT
"Solar Automated Lighting
System" from the above title simply means the use of "Solar
energy" to simply operate light automatically. Before we go deeply into
this topic we have to first understand the meaning of "Solar energy and
how it can be conserved and used for different purposes. Solar energy can be
defined simply as "electromagnetic radiations" reaching us from the
sun. This cheap source of energy that is being obtained in our environment is
an alternative source of energy which is environmentally clean and friendly and
does not have, an adverse effect on individuals and the environment at large
unlike the use of petroleum that has caused a lot of pollutions in jour
environment. The burning of petrol & diesel oil by motor vehicles, power
plants and factories releases a lot of pollutants into the air. From example,
for every l00din of petrol burnt an average car releases about: .0.15kg carbon
11 oxide .0.01kg nitrogen oxide 0.008kg un-burnt hydrocarbons 0.0005kg solid
particles and .0.0005kg sulphur IV oxide into the atmosphere. A stationary car
that has its engines still running add much more pollutants than what is listed
above; often lead compounds such as tetraethyl Lead are added to petrol to
prevent knocking. Burning such petrol releases lead compounds into the
atmosphere. All air pollutants affect the health of people seriously. They
cause dizziness, fatigue and lethargy. The solid particles clog and damage the
lung tissues, lead compounds have been shown to cause brain damage in young
children, animals and plants and also adversely affected by air pollutants. The
problem of airpollution is serious in big cities and industrial areas where
coal, gas and petroleum are used as energy source. Besides air pollution, there
is also problem of oil spill. These occur when there are accidents or blow-up
of off.Thore oil rigs, or when tankers transporting oil leak into the sea. When
oil spills occur, the surrounding coasts are coated with oil. As a result,
sea-birds, fish and other marine life may be killed in large numbers. It is
very difficult and expensive to clean up oil spills with various negative
effects of the use of petroleum as a source ot energy outlined above. We will
now infer that the conservation of "solar energy" as an alternative
source of energy because it is cheap, clean and environmentally friendly,
economically advantageous, and long lasting etc. This form of energy is not all
new to man, for it is as old as man's existence on earth. The length of time
and proportion of the amount of solar radiations reaching the earth varies from
place to place, due to earths orientation and attenuation factors. Solar energy
utilization is the concept of usable solar radiation. Our interest is with the
energy that can be put to work (i.e. energy that can be harvested). It has been
several purposes. ,. Solar radiations are used in drying agricultural products,
clothes and for warming water in containers. The use of solar energy in these various
ways have not employed enough scientific principles for tapping solar
radiations for man's economic use.
