Socio-Economic Impact Of Agricultural Development Programme On Cassava Production In Umuahia South Local Government Of Abia State
ABSTRACT
The study
examined socio economic impact of ADP on cassava production in Umuahia South.
Specific objectives outlined to achieve this broad objectives includes. To
delineating the socio-economic characteristics of farmers in the study area, to
examine the relationship between the socio economic characteristics of cassava
farmers and their output. To compare the selected characteristics of ADP
farmers and their socio economic impact in the areas of output, income, farm
size, education etc. Data used for this analysis were collcted through
questionnaires administered to 40 ADP and 40 non ADP farmers, in the study
area. The data obtained were analyzed using descriptive techniques, paired z
and regressions. The results of the analysis showed that improved seed/cutting
and fertilizer were the most adopted inputs, in the area. Income is the major
determinants of farmers output. The test of significance revealed that output
of the ADP farmers is significantly greater than that of the non - ADP fanners.
Constraints facing farmers in the study areas, includes high cost of inputs,
low price of produces and transportation difficulties. The greatest constraints
facing ADPs arc shortage of fund, shortage of trained staff, and lack of
transport facilities. The ADP should intensify efforts to improve farmer's
adoption of improved technologies, the government should provide more funds to
the ADPs to enable it recruit and train more staff and purchase more vehicles
and motor bikes needed to reach farmers
