Sexual Behaviour And Semen Quality of Rabbit Bucks Fed Diets Containing Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans Houtt)
ABSTRACT
Eighteen sexually mature rabbit bucks
were used to evaluate the influence of feeding nutmeg fragrans) on their sexual
behaviour and semen quality. The nutmeg seeds were milled and incorporated into
the diets of the bucks at different levels (0%, 2.5% and 5%) and semen samples
were collected and analyzed. Results obtained show that the treatments were not
significantly different (P>0.05) from each over for all the parameters of
interest. The semen volume tended to decrease with increase in the level of
nutmeg in the diet, with T1having the highest value of 0.95 ml and T3 having
the lowest value of 0.76rn1. The range of values obtained for motility, live
sperm and abnormal sperm proportion fall within normal ranges in the literature.
There was a reduction in the reaction time obtained between T1 (12.13 secs) and
T3(10.30 secs), thus justifying nutmeg as exhibiting aphrodisiac properties.
Sperm concentrate varies obtained ranged from 22.00x106/ml for T1to
25.27x106/ml for T3. This suggests that further increase in the level of
MyrItica fragrans in the diet will lead to a significant variation in the
treatments. it is concluded from this study that even though there were no
significant differences between the treatments, Myrislica fragrais tended to
improve the reproductive performance of the rabbit bucks.
