ABSTRACT
The aim of the study is to find out the sex
differences in the performance of students in science and mathematics and its
implication for gender re-orientation. The population is made up of all
students in 10 model secondary schools in Abia State. All students in the 4
sampled, got by Proportionate Stratified Random Sampling Techniques according
to Eduçation Zones, were used for the study. The total students sample are 473
students who offered Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Biology in the
schools. The instrument for data collection was a Performa or schedule prepared
by the researcher to collect the results from the various schools. Four (4)
Null Hypotheses were postulated and tested using Chi-Squared Statistics.
Results show that X² calculated is greater than X² tabulated in all cases. This
means that the null hypotheses are rejected and alternative taken which means
that there is a significant difference in all cases between the performance of
males and females in West African Senior School Certificate Examinations
(WASSCE) in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. It is recommended that
counselors continue genderorientation to encourage females to pay particular
attention to these subjects.
