ABSTRACT

In the present scenario of environment consciousness, the new quality requirements not only emphasize on the intrinsic functionality and long service life of the product but also production process that is environment friendly. Copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) were synthesized using a combination of aqueous extract of Xauclea latifolia and 0.15g of copper sulphate (CuSOj) solution to obtain concentrations of 1 OOOmg-lOOOOmg. Characterization of the particles was done b\ I'V-Vis spectroscopy. Fourier transform infrared (FT1R), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and the X-ray Diffraction(XRD) average crystallite size was found to be 79nm. In this stud}, aqueous extract of leaves of Nauclea latifolia were investigated for antibacterial activity using the standard agar well diffusion technique against four clinical isolates (Staphylococcus epidermis, Proteus mirabilis, Salmonella typhi and Streptococcos pneumonia.}. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) was achieved by microbroth dilution and was also determined by plate assay of chlorophenicle. Characterization by UVvisible spectrometry revealed peak absorbance of 287 nm, while FT1R showed the presence of fi\e functional groups which shows different stretches of bonds shown at different peaks; the absorption band at 3276.3cm'1 indicates the presence of O-H of an alcohol. The absorption band at 2918.5 and 2851.4 cm'1 show's the presence of C-H of akyl groups. The peaks at 1722.0cm'1 shows the presence of C=O of aldehydes. The band at 1602.8 cm'1 indicates the presence of C=C of alkene. The band at 1021.8 cm'1 indicates the presence of C-0 of alcohols. The data from this study indicate the potential of copper nanoparticle of Nanclea latifolia as a suitable alternative antibacterial agent for incorporation into orthodox medicine in health care delivery in Nigeria.
