Responses Of Cocoyam To Poultry Manure, Rice Husk And Potassium Fertilizer In A Tropical Ultisol In Uyo, Southeastern Nigeria
ABSTRACT
Two field trials were conducted on a texturally sandy loam
soil in 2006 and 2007 cropping seasons at Uyo, Akwa lbom State, a humid forest
agroecology of Southeastern Nigeria to determine the responses of cocoyam to
poultry manure; potassium fertilizer and rice husk waste. The field trials were
to ascertain the responses of cocoyam (Colocasia escu/enta ) to poultry manure
and inorganic K fertilizer and to determine the effects of poultry manure and
rice husk waste on growth and yield of cocoyam and soil chemical and physical
properties. The experiments were laid out as 4x4 factorial experiment arranged
in a randomized complete block design. There were sixteen treatments comprising
different combinations of poultry manure at 0, 5, 10 and 15 tlha and potassium
fertilizer at 0, 40, 80, and 120 kg 1(20/ha. Treatments for the poultry manure
and rice husk waste studies were also sixteen and comprised all possible
combinations of four levels of poultry manure (0, 5, 10 and 15 t/ha) and rice
husk waste (0, 5, 10 and 15 t/ha). For each experiment, replication was thrice.
Data obtained were subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the
significant means separated using the least significant difference (LSD).
Results showed that increasing the poultry manure up to 15 t/ha significantly
