Repeatability Of Egg Quality Traits In Cross-Bred Normal, Naked-Neck And Frizzle Chickens.:- Nwabuko, Eberechi M.
ABSTRACT
A study was
conducted using weight lines of F2-backcross normal feathered, naked-neck and
frizzle chickens to determine the repeatability of egg quality traits, •
namely: egg weight, shell • thickness and Haugh Unit for each of the lines.
Repeatability estimates of each of these parameters for the 6 genotypes at
average ages of 42-48weeks were studied. Repeatability estimates for egg weight
were low to moderate in all the lines except for heavy frizzle line which
measured up to 70%. Estimates for Haugh unit were low to moderate ranging from
0.124 -0.583, the highest repeatability estimate for Haugh unit was recorded in
light nakedneck line (R= 58%). Repeatability estimates for shell thickness were
generally low, with the highest value recorded for heavy frizzle line. Results
revealed that there were significant differences in egg weight for the various
lines with the Heavy Frizzle Line (HFL), Heavy normal Line (HNL), and Heavy
Naked-Neck line (HNaL) weighing more than their low body weight counterparts.
Mean shell thickness was statically insignificant for most of the lines except
light Naked-Neck line (LNaL) which had much lower value (10.91mm). The Haugh unit
values were high in all lines with HNaL and HFL having significantly higher
values than other genotype.
