ABSTRACT

Ten browse plants found in natural pastures and used often as ornamental plants and for ruminants feeding were collected in the rainy season. Their leaves were assayed for their proximate, macro minerals and endogenous (anti nutritional) constituents. There were wide variations among browse species, which differed significant (p<0.05) in crude protein, ether extract, crude fibre, anti nutritional factors and macrominerals. Crude protein, values varied from 7.82% in Aspilia Africana to 15.93% in Centroserna pubescens. Crudefibre content varied from 15.41% in Casauirina equisitifolia to 30.48% in A.africana. A high vaiability in ash content obtained which ranged from 5.46% in Persea Americana to 12.85% in A. Africana. The concentration of antinutritional factors was generally low and did not pose any major health problems to animals. Flavonoid ranged from 0.24-0.65% in C.pubescens and Gomphrena celesiodes respectively. Alkaloids content ranged from 0.17% in C.pubescens to 0.99% in Spondias mombin. Saponin, oxalate, phytate and hydrocyanic acid levels were low with overall mean levels of 0.75, 0.23%, 0.24% and 21.47mg/kg respectively. The concentration of Mg, Ca, Na, p and k contents varied from 11.39-28.07, 27.91-116.48,9.89-43.77T 20.27-45.76 and 165.70-464.33mg/bog on dry matter basis respectively. The concentration Na, p and Mg were low and varied from 11.74 in B. vulgaris, G. Celosioides to 45.76mg/100g in C. equisitifolia and 11.39 in C. equisitifolia to 28.07mg/100g in A.africana.
