Proximate Analysis of larvae, pupae and adult of Callosobruchus maculatus:- Odoh, Joy E.
ABSTRACT
The proximate analysis of immature stages
(larvae, pupae) and adult beetles of Callosobruchus maculatus was carried. This
was achieved by culturing the various nutritional content at the laboratory of
Food Science and Technology Department of the Michael Okpara University of
Agriculture, Umudike. The various stages of > C. maculatus were found to
contain crude proteins, crude fiber, fats, ash, moisture and carbohydrate in
appreciable quantities. The percentage composition of the crude protein and
carbohydrate were as high as 37.00% and 37.25% respectively for the immature
stages and the adult bruchid. Callosobruchus maculatus contained also appreciable
quantities of fats and moisture content. The immature stages recorded 12.04%
for moisture while the adult recorded 11.94%. Larvae and pupae have high
content of fat (28.5%) than adult stages (25.5%). Ash content of nutritional
stand point, Callosobruchus maculatus- has been found to be rich in protein and
based on the results its consumption should be integrated into human and animal
diets.
