ABSTRACT

The broad objective of this study is to determine the problems and prospects of agricultural insurance in Ikwuano Local Government Area, Abia State and make recommendations based on the f5ndings. Three (3) autonomous communities were randomly selected and four (4) villages were randomly selected from each of the communities and 7 farmers were randomly selected from each village and they made up the sample size of 80 farmers. Primary data and secondary data were used. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics and percentages. The findings of the study showed that: i. Most farmers have not embraced agricultural Insurance  ii. Very few farmers have benefited from agricultural insurance. iii. Low income, small farm size and low literacy level of farmers are me of the problems of agricultural insurance. iv. agricultural insurance has a future in that most farmers have heard of agricultural insurance and require insurance in various crop production. Based on the findings, it is therefore recommended that farmers should avail themselves of high educational status, change their attitude towards research findings and innovations and increase the size of their farms. The research and extension agents should improve on their efficiency and that the government should subsidize agriculture, establish insurance companies near local governments and agricultural insurance companies be adequately funded.
