Probiotics Bacteria From Two Fish Samples Purchased In Umuahia Metropolis:- Oguobi Onyinyechi J
ABSTRACT
Probiotics are live microorganisms which when
administered in adequate amount, confer a health benefit on the host. The aim
ofthis study was to characterize lactic acid bacteria from fish. Two different
fish purchased from umuahia metropolis, Abia state, were subjected to standard
microbiology methods. The samples were serially diluted using ten- fold serial
dilution method and plated using spread plate method on De man rogosa and
sharpe agar (MRS) agar. Well isolated colonies were counted and colonies with
typical characteristics were picked from each plate, sub-cultured onto MRS agar
to obtain pure isolates and identified using biochemical methods. The total LAB
counts ranged from 4.1 Ixio4 to 4.63xl04cfulgml. The presumed LAB isolates were
tolerant to different PH levels (4.38± 0.00d to 4.32 ± 0.00d), NaCl levels
(4.68 ± 0.00a to 4.63 ± 0.000a), and Temperature levels (4.51 ± 0.00c to 4.49 ±
0.00c). Three strains of LAB isolates (2 Lactobacillus spp, and 1 Pedicoccus
spp.) were isolated. The presence ofprobiotics in fish could stimulate the
immune system, improve intestinal tract’s health and protect against certain
diseases such as diarrhea and respiratory tract infections.
