Prevalence Of Malaria Parasite And Hiv Infection In Federal Medical Centre Umuahia, Abia State.
ABSTRACT
Malaria is a
Vector-borne disease that is widespread in tropical and subtropical regions; it
is transmitted by female anopheles mosquitoes. Malaria kills millions of people
every year, and it is a hindrance to economic development. Human
Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is an infection that causes Acquired Immune
Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) which is a life threatening illness. It is spread
from person to person by blood contact; it kills millions of people every year.
The prevalence of malaria parasite and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)
infection in Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia was investigated using serological
techniques, stat pack (Unigold Kit) to determine HIV and Quality blood control
method for malaria parasite of the 100 patients screened for both HIV infection
and Malaria parasite, 72 (72%) were infected with malaria parasite, 20 (20%)
were infected with HIV . and 8 (8%) had both malaria parasite and HIV
infection. The inference drawn from the analysis using Chi square at 95%
confidence level shows that the rate of prevalence of malaria parasite is high
over that of HIV infection. On the effect of marital status and age there was
no significance effect in the prevalence of malaria parasite and HIV infection.
