ABSTRACT

A total of 350 persons who attended the Medical Centre of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU) made up of 139 males and 211 females of different ages had their blood samples examined microscopically for the presence of malaria parasites. Structured questionnaires were also administered to gather data on the KAP studies. Out of the number examined, 94 (26.86%) were infected. More males 39 (28.06%) than female 55 (26.07%) were infected. The age group 61 - 70 years recorded the highest rate of infection 5 (83.33%) followed by the age group 41 - 50 (58.06%). Malaria was the most common illness reported in this study and in the clinic. Very many of the respondents 335 (95.71%) had heard of malaria while 341 (97.43%) had suffered from malaria before. Fever was the highest of the signs and symptoms 110 (31.43%) reported followed by vomiting 55 (15.71%), headache 40 (11.43%), and body pains 40 (11.43%). Some of the respondents 240 (68.57%) associated malaria infection to mosquito bites while some others said it was through the ingestion of palm oil 40 (11.43%) and contaminated food and water 45 (12.86%). Surroundings should be kept clean to avoid creating breeding sites for mosquitoes
