Prevalence Of Intestinal Parasites Of Wall Gecko (Hemidactylus frenatus ), In Michael Okpara University Of Agriculture, Umudike, Ikwuano Local Governemnt Area, Abia State, Nigeria.
ABSTRACT
A study on the
prevalence of intestinal parasites of wall gecko was done in Umudike, lkwuano
Local Government Area, Abia State, Nigeria. A total of fifty (50) wall geckos
of different sizes were collected from different sites within the campus of the
Michael Okpara University of Agriculture and the premises of the National Root
Crops Research Institute both in Umudike. Examination of their faecal samples
using wet preparation method showed that 72.0% were infected. Five parasites
namely Ascaris spp. 9 (18.0%), Trichuris vulpis 3 (6.0%), Hookworm 2 (4.0%),
Enterobius vermicularis, I (2.0%) and Taenia species I (2.0%) were recorded.
Ascaris sp. had the highest prevalence of 18.0%. Multiple parasitisms were also
encountered. More females 22 (52.0%) than male 14 (20.0%) of the wall geckos
were infected. The diet of geckos and their habit of moving on the wall which
may be faecally contaminated may contribute to the presence of these parasites.
The presence of these parasites could possibly have zoonotic implications thus
' attention should be given to the presence of these lizards in our homes.
