Prevalence Of Coccidiosis In Poultry Birds In Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State (A Case Study 2003 To 2007)
ABSTRACT
The research was carried out in Ikot
Ekpene Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State to investigate the outbreak of
coccidiosis in four private owned poultry lai'ms. the work compared the outbreUk
ol coccidiosis farms in Ikot Ekpene. I
have Ndiok's farm, Udosen's farm, Etete's farm and Ukot's farm. Data kept from
2003 to 2007 were received from the farms for investigation. Faecal droppings
from the birds were also collected for laboratory analysis. The study was
carried out during the rains in the months of August to November, 2008. The
commonest parasite afiecting tile birds that were confirned to the poultry was
Eimeria tenel. Among the six (6) species of Eimeria, it was only E. Tenella
that was seen. However, coccidiosis was found only in young birds (2-7 weeks
old). It is concluded from this research that. L', Tend/ci was the most
important. parasite that caused poultry disease among poultry birds in lkot
Ekpene. Morbidity and mortality from each farm were compared to see the
prevalence in each month. Some measures were also given to encourage poultry
farmers in order to minimize mortality rate.
