Prevalence of Biofilm Forming Staphylococcus aureus in Livestock Feeds:- Onuekuma, Uchechi A
ABSTRACT
The aim ofthe present study isolated
biofilm-forming Staphylococcus aureus from livestock feed. Forty-Eight (48)
feed samples were collected from different feed millers in Umuahia
Mctropolis.The samples were collected into sterile specimen bottles and taken
to the laboratory for isolation of Staphylococcus aureus. Layer had the highest
frequency of occurrence with 7(58.3%). Followed by Finisher and grower which
share the same frequency ofoccurrence ofwith 5 (41.6) Starter had the least
frequency of occurrence with 3(25.0%). Levofioxcin and Ofloxacin exhibited the
most susceptibility rate with 18 (90.0). Followed by Criprofloxacin with a
susceptibility rate of 16(80.0), followed by Gentamicin with a susceptibility
rate of 14 (70.0), followed by Azithromycin with a susceptibility rate of 9
(45.0), followed by Cefhiaxone with a susceptibility rate of 8 (40.0), followed
by Imipeneme with a susceptibility rate of 7 (35.0) while Cefotaxime and
Cefcpime shared the least susceptibility rate of 6 (30.0). Cefotaxime showed
the highest pattern of 11(55.0) while Ofloxacin showed the least resistance
pattern of 0 (0.0). Out of the 20 isolates, 8 were positive for biofilm.
