Phytochemical determination and comparative effect of some plant extract on the radial growth of Phytophthora colocasiae Racib:- Eke, Ebenezer C
Abstract
Taro leaf
blight caused by Phylophthora colocasla Raciborski is the most destructive
disease of taro (Colocasla esculenta (L.) Schott) worldwide. The antimicrobial
activity of ethanolic leaf extract of Senna alata. Justicia secunda,
Chromolaena odorata, and Aloe barbadensis against P.colocasia were investigated
at different percentage of lOOpg/ml, 50gg/ml and 25pg/ml.The result showed that
only ethanolic leaf extract of C.odorata and S.alata inhibited the growth of
the orgamsm.The mean inhibition diameter recorded for S.alata at lOOgg/ml,
50gg/ml and 25gg/ml are 5.5±6.63, l±0.0 and 0.0 respectively. C.odorata at
these concentrations gave 10.5±0.70. 6.6j±5.5 and 1 ±0.0. Phytochemical screening
of the extracts revealed the presence of Tannis, Saponins, Alkaloids. Flavoids
and Steroids. These findings suggest that C.odorata and S.alata could serve as
potential source of bio-fungicides for the control of Taro leaf blight.
