Performance Of Weaned Rabbits Fed Diets Treated With Some Organic Acids In The Humid Tropics
ABSTRACT
The study investigated the performance of weaned rabbits fed diets treated with some organic acids. A total of twenty-four weaned rabbits were fed four experimental (TI= controL T2=acetic acid, T3= citric acid, T4= formic acid) diets. The diets were treated with 0.5% of the various organic acids. The study lasted 86 days during which data were collected on the growth, feed intake, carcass . and organ characteristics and feed cost benefit. The organic acids had no significant effects (P>0.05) on the growth and other performance criteria of rabbits. The carcass characteristics of the rabbits differed significantly (P<O.05) for the shank, heart, back-cut, spleen, intestine and shoulder proportions, with formic acid treated diet producing the highest values for majority of the carcass proportions: Shank (2.18%), back-cut (13.47%) and Intestine (5.60%). Mortality rate was significantly reduced with the use of organic acids and was least for acetic acid treated diets (16.67%). Generally, the results indicated that treatment of diets with organic acids had beneficial effect on rabbit production, though review of the appropriate organic acid level may be necessary for optimum results.
