ABSTRACT
The study
focused on the effects
of organizational structure on employees’ performance in Abia State University,
Uturu (ABSU). The specific objectives was to: ascertain the effects of
centralization on employees’ task performance in ABSU, evaluate the effects of
formalization on employees’ contextual performance in ABSU and examine the
effects of specialization on employees’ adaptive performance in ABSU. The study
made use of survey research design. The population of the study consisted of
both the academic and nonacademic staff of ABSU. Primary and secondary sources
of data was used. Content validity and Cronbach Alpha reliability of the
research instrument was used. Descriptive and inferential statistics was used
to analyses the study objectives and test the posited hypotheses. Findings
revealed that; at 1% level (Sig < .01) of significance, centralization has a
positive and significant effects on employees’ task performance in ABSU. At 1%
level (Sig < .01) of significance, formalization has a positive and
significant effects on employees’ contextual performance in ABSU. Based on this
findings, the study concluded that the structure of ABSU had a significant and
positive effect on employees’ performance. Therefore, the study recommended
that; the management of ABSU need to sustain the components of centralization
of structure as in practice in the University especially as it significantly
affects employees’ task performance in the University. However, management need
to localize authority for decision-making and adopt employees’ participation in
decision making, especially at faculties and departmental levels. Also, the
management of ABSU need to sustain the components of formalization as they are
having positive and significant effects on employees’ contextual performance in
the University. However, management should properly coordinate the transmission
of decisions reached by enhancing the flow of information and communication
among various structural component in the University to facilitate employees,
contextual performance and attainment of University mission.
