ABSTRACT

The study assessed nutritional status and micronutrient intake of primary school children (5-11 years) in Isiala and Ehime Mbano Local Government Area (LGA) of Imo State. Two hundred (200) children were randomly selected for the survey. This study was earned out in order to ascertain the nutritional status and micro nutrient intake of primary school children in Isiala Mbano and Ehime Mbano local government areas of Imo State using anthropometric, biochemical, clinical and diet intake methodologies. Prevalence of stunting, wasting and under weight was determined using anthropmetric indices, diet history and weighed food intake. Dietary adequacy of the children was assessed using weighed food intake. Food frequency questionnaire was used to determine food habits ofthe children. Vitamin A and iron status were determined by serum iron status and serum vitamin A concentration. Clinical examination was used to identify goitre rate. The results of the biochemical analysis of study children showed that all the surveyed children both male and female despite their ages had the normal range of vitamin A in blood. More females fell below the normal range for iron in blood than males. Children aged 5-7years were significantly (P<0.05) more iron deficient than those aged 8-1 lyears. Female children were over weight than males. More males were significantly wasted and underweight than females. Only 2% of the study children were obese (1% male and 1% female) Correlation analysis showed significant relationship between nutrient intake (protein, calcium, folate, riboflavin, fat, fibre and vitamin C) serum vitamin A level and serum iron level. Programs to improve iron status and malaria prevention strategies should be organized. Priority should be given to the type of food these children take since their source offood was mainly starchy food to avoid over weight.
